How to Make Wash Day Easier for You and Your Little One
Let’s be real—wash day with kids can feel like a whole production. Whether they’re scared of water, hate getting their face wet, or just don’t sit still, it’s a lot to manage. Trust me, I’ve been there. My son Amir used to be terrified of water in his face, and getting through a wash day without tears felt impossible. But with a little creativity and patience, we turned bath time into a routine he actually enjoys—and now I can wash his hair without the drama.
Here are some tips that worked for us and might just help you too:
1. Turn It Into Playtime
Kids love to play, so make bath time fun! Let them bring their favorite waterproof toys into the tub or shower. We use bath crayons and floating toys to keep Amir distracted while I get to work on his curls.
2. Use a Rinse Cup or Visor
A rinse cup with a soft spout is a game-changer for minimizing water on their face. Another great option is a shower visor or hat designed to keep water out of their eyes. Amir hated getting water on his face, so these tools made a big difference for us.
3. Let Them Hold the Showerhead
If you have a detachable showerhead, let your little one take the lead! Giving Amir “control” over the water helped him feel more comfortable in the shower. I’d show him how to rinse his hair first, then take over when it was time to do the heavy lifting.
4. Sing Songs or Tell Stories
Singing a favorite song or telling a fun story during bath time can work wonders to keep their focus away from the water. Amir loves when I make up silly stories about his curls—he thinks it’s hilarious!
5. Talk Them Through It
Explain each step before you do it. Kids feel safer when they know what’s coming. I’ll say something like, “Now we’re going to rinse your hair, and I’ll tilt your head back so no water gets on your face.” Amir loves to hear what’s happening—it makes him feel involved.
6. Use Gentle Products They’ll Love
This part’s important: Use hair care products that won’t sting their eyes or irritate their scalp. Our Hydrating Baby Bundle is perfect for this. The shampoo is gentle and doesn’t strip their curls, and the conditioner doubles as a leave-in for extra hydration. Bonus: It's fragrance free, so it's perfect for eczema prone skin.
7. Be Patient and Positive
The first few times might still be a little rough, and that’s okay. Keep calm, stay positive, and cheer them on. Kids pick up on your energy, so if you make bath time feel like a fun activity instead of a chore, they’ll start to enjoy it too.
8. Consistency is Key
The more consistent you are with bath and wash day routines, the easier it gets. Stick to a schedule and use these tips every time. Over time, your little one will get more comfortable and might even start to look forward to it!
Bath time doesn’t have to be a battle. With the right tools, a little patience, and some fun, you can turn it into a bonding moment that you’ll both enjoy.
